Still Forming Model

Continue slapping the clay, using tool #3. Rotate the model in one hand while using the tool to paddle the clay into a more elongated shape.

Use tool #3 to flatten one side of the clay form. Alternately, thump model gently on the table until the side is sufficiently flattened. (See photo on right)

Flat bottom of form. When building your ocarina, the flattened area is where the mouthpiece will be attached.

Finishing Model

Spray the model with water, then use the palms of your hands to smooth the surface. Examine the surface under an angled light to check for irregularities. If you notice any, use tool #2 to scrape the surface smooth, and fill in any hollows. Moisten the surface again and use palms for the final smoothing.

Now using tool #4, slice the model lengthwise. Don't cut through the flattened "bottom."

Wrap the two pieces in the plastic produce bag, and set aside where they won't get damaged.
