Ocarinas by K. Dunster

Making a Simple
Plaster Ocarina Mold

Page Two

As was stated on the first page, the first thing you will be making is the clay ocarina form. This is the clay model that the plaster is poured over. This model must be made with care, because it determines the shape of your mold, and the ocarinas you will be making with it. But before you start to make it, you need to plan it out.

Designing the Model

Before you start your model, keep in mind that it will be cut in two pieces (this will be a two-piece slump mold). The two parts must not have any undercuts (indentations in the model that would prevent easy removal from the mold).
See diagram at right. Figure 1 in the diagram is what you want--easy removal of clay. In Figure 2, the top edges of the mold hang over, which will prevent clay removal.

undercuts

Avoid "dimples"or undercuts in your clay model that would make it difficult to remove the pressed clay ocarina body.

Forming the Model

The tools used to make the model are reviewed here.

In the first step, use the palms of your hands to press, roll, and slap the clay into an approximation of the shape you want your ocarina to have.

The "rough draft."
