Insert the slot stick (masking taped end first) into the larger opening of the clay tube. Gently push the stick toward the narrow end while jiggling it up and down and from side to side. This "jiggling" helps steer the stick through the mouthpiece and will prevent gouging the inner walls.

Once the slot stick is inserted, check the narrow end for its fit around the stick. The fit should be snug with no gaps. This mouthpiece is too wide, and needs to be narrowed.

With the slot stick still inside the mouthpiece, dab a little water on the gap, and pinch closed.

Trim off the excess clay and smooth edges. Remove the slot stick and set the mouthpiece out in the air for about 15-20 minutes to stiffen up. When the clay is firm, re-insert the slot stick. Trim the clay flat at the narrow end, flush with the tip of the slot stick that is inside it. The slot stick prevents the mouthpiece from collapsing during the trimming.

When both body pieces and mouthpiece are firm enough, assembly of the ocarina can begin.
