How to Make a Clay Sweet Potato Ocarina

The clay is pressed into the mold and is ready for trimming.

Lay the fettling knife (potter's knife) blade (tool #4) flat against the top of the mold. Slice off the overhanging clay.

Leave the trimmed piece in the mold while the clay "stiffens" up. The plaster, because it is porous, helps to remove moisture from the clay. This may take up to 30 minutes, depending on the moistness of the clay, and the air temperature and humidity. The ocarina is easier to make when the clay is firmed up a bit.

Once the clay is "leather hard" (stiff as cheddar cheese, but still flexible) it can be taken out from the mold. The channel in the mold facilitates easy removal.
Store in a plastic bag and set aside until needed.
