Glazing a Stoneware Sculpture
(Dragon Ocarina)

Glazes

Now for the next step - to apply the glaze.

The glazes I use for the dragon's body are Laguna's "Snowflake" (MS 26) and Cream (MS 19), both cone 5 stoneware glazes. Both these glazes are opaque.

Glaze Accents

First, apply two (2) coats of Snowflake glaze to the areas that you want to stand out. (I use brush 2 for this). Then apply one (1) coat of the Cream on top of the Snowflake. The areas I chose to "highlight" were the wing ridges, throat and belly, the crests on the head, spine ridges, and the claws. These areas will show up a lighter color than the rest of the body after the firing.

The photos show what the ocarina looks like after this step of the glazing is done.

Another view of the dragon, showing more of the belly and back.
